If you lived in this society, would you take the risk of hiding books like Montag? Why or why not?10/9/2012
Ms. Greene
10/9/2012 01:02:02 am
I think that a society without the ability to think is not a society that I would want to live in, but I also think that I am too much of a sheep to take such a chance, like Montag did. I love that we have the freedom to think and without reading, I wouldn't be able to think because my world view would be limited. It is easy to say that I would stand up and take a stance against the government, but it is hard to do, especially when my life is comfortable and happy.
Angel Magana
10/15/2012 01:05:49 am
Yes I would take the risk of hiding books because you could learn so much more and reading is fun and if reading was band I would read

If I Lived In Their Society, I Wouldnt Risk Hiding The Books. Maybe Having Books Around Would Be Useful But I Dont Think Its Worth It All At The End

I would take the risk of hiding a book or books because then I could learn a lot by the books I read.

10/9/2012 02:37:25 am
I would take the Risk of hiding books , if we didn't have book people wouldn't be smart , they would have poor vocabulary , and they would know nothing about the past . If we couldn't read we would not be aware or things that are happening in the world.
allie greene
10/9/2012 04:19:10 am
I was thinking about that.... I can't imagine a world where all we would know is what WE have experienced. We live in such a small bubble. We would never have any knowledge of things that happened elsewhere or in another time.
Holden Thomas
10/12/2012 02:42:48 pm
Books aren't the only way for people to get smart though.
Markus Rieks
10/14/2012 07:24:16 am
True, but would a government really want to give away knowledge freely so anyone could access anything? Most likely not because then the people would be to hard to control.
ag
10/14/2012 08:53:21 am
I wonder ho else people would acquire knowledge? it seems like if one takes a passive road to learning, then one does not learn as much...
Idalmis Gramajo
10/13/2012 03:00:48 pm
I don't think I would be brave enough to even steal a book. Yet alone hide it. So, I would probably have a poor vocabulary.
Alejandra Huerta
10/14/2012 02:26:09 am
i have to disagree with you because if we didn't have any books we wouldn't know how to express ourselves or know anything about our past.
Jocelyn Reyes
10/14/2012 02:45:51 pm
I agree, but disagree at the same time. I wouldn't really know how the government would find the book since theres so many in the world and it would be even harder to find if I had it hid, so maybe they wouldn't even find it in the first place, so it could be a good risk.
Aurora Huerta
10/14/2012 02:23:15 am
I agree with you Tatiana, because if we didn't read at all we wouldn't know anything nor talk correctly.

I would take a risk to hide some books because people wouldnt make any sense when they talk. Although if they caught me I would probably go to jail. Its a very hard decision but I would try to take the risk.
allie
10/10/2012 03:57:18 am
Haha. I giggled when you wrote this. I feel this about people who post on facebook. Their posts make no sense because they don't understand how to edit or write. I worry that this has already happened and that we are destined to be an ignorant culture because we don't read anymore.
Dany Jarjoura

Its weird how they are tricked into not reading leading them to be stupid

I don't read a lot but once in a wile I would like to get my hands on a book. In Fahrenheit 451 people are just dumb. They don't think for themselves. Their minds are just blanks.
ag
10/10/2012 03:58:42 am
It is nice to at least have the option of reading, even when we don't exercise that option. I agree that people who don't read have blank minds....

I agree with you they are dumb and they can't think for themselves its kind of sad in a way
Carrie Plotkin
10/10/2012 03:45:51 am
No i wouldnt because i would not want to be caught with it and recieve a harsh pushiment. But i also think it would be cool to be all like undercover. Its stupid how they have hide in order to read them!
allie
10/10/2012 03:59:51 am
I like the idea of having a secret reading society. I wonder if it would turn into something more exciting to do just because of the fact that it was illegal.
Johanna
10/10/2012 04:57:53 am
no i wouldnt take a book and hide it just like Montag because ill have to keep hiding the book with a ton of close calls. i really wouldnt take the risk of getting cought and having my house burned down.

Ashley Carey
10/10/2012 06:21:19 am
I would, because I'd want to read to learn. However, I would be worried about getting caught mostly because of the harsh punishments and how your looked down upon. When a society is that disfunctional I find that when you know that the rules that they have are wrong, you do what you want to do and not worry about anything or anyone else. I do think that it's weird that he's a fireman and he burns books when he still thinks it is wrong, but he takes a book out each time. I wonder if there's any other fireman that does that? Someone that Montag could or might relate to? I definitely suspect that there is someone else that does that, but do it in a different way than he does? In conclusion, I would take the risk, but if I felt that at points during the hiding I would stress myself out over it, than I'd stop just to be safe.
Joey Teahan

Markus Rieks
10/14/2012 07:29:29 am
Are you sure it's not worth it? Some of Humanities finest work has been through literature. Most historians classify if a civilization is civil or not by seeing if they have a writing system. So don't you think it would be important to preserve that tradition?
ms. greene
10/14/2012 08:56:26 am
well, how do you define literature? one could argue that anything written is literature, in which case you are burning all of the humanities when you are burning books.
Samantha Tong
10/14/2012 08:10:22 am
I agree with this because reading is good and all, but just knowing if you get caught with books then the firemen would burn your house and possibly you.

I'm going to have to disagree because I think they only burn the books not the people. Like in the part where Montag wanted the lady to get out of the burning house and leave the books.
Janet
10/14/2012 05:02:49 am
This Is Very true I agree 100% . It's Better To Fit In. Especially If It Has To Do With Your Life and Dying Over Books It's Not Worth It.

No i wouldnt because it isnt worth getting killed and your house getting burnt down only because of a book but if i was montag than i probably will because you never no what a book tells you or whats it about
ms greene
10/14/2012 08:58:22 am
i never thought of that! it is a lot to risk if you have no idea what the book is. Are there any books worth risking? I would think that a lot of people would die for the sake of the bible or the koran.
Matthew Rodriguez
10/13/2012 11:42:33 am
I would take the risk, with out books people wouldn't make cense when they talk. If I hid a book that was educational and had some good sayings, I would be smarter than most people. I would also have to be very careful of hiding the book because I would not want to get burned alive or have my house burned down.
ms greene
10/14/2012 08:59:41 am
haha! True!plus, if you were smarter, you would have more power than the rest of people. usually the people with the most power are the ones who are the smartest (at least, I hope so)

Michelle Covarrubias
10/13/2012 01:42:28 pm
Yes I would totally take the risk and hide the books because books are like portals to other worlds. When I read them it feels like if I were actually there and seeing what the characters are seeing. Also books also teach us about how everything was in the past. I would try to hide them somewhere really secure so nobody would ever find them. But if they were ever found then I would turn in my books so my home wouldn’t be burnt at all because I would need somewhere to live and I don’t want to face the consequences at all for hiding them.
Idalmis Gramajo
10/13/2012 02:54:54 pm
If I lived in that society, I would not take the risk of hiding books because the consequences are too harsh and although I do enjoy reading, being burned and having my house burnt isn't worth it. I would also feel really guilty if I had books hidden that no one knew about. There are others ways to learn in this society, that don't involve reading so we could still learn.
ms greene
10/14/2012 09:04:09 am
I like what you said about other ways to learn. What other ways can you think of? I would feel guilty too.....
Jocelyn Reyes

I guess I would hide a book because in this society people don't actually think. They believe that children don't have to know anything, so they only watch t.v or play sports. If I would get caught then I think it would be worth it.
Alejandra Huerta
10/14/2012 02:20:49 am
I would hide a book because its better to know and not to know. It also depends if the book is interesting or important. i would also hide a book, but not just one, but more books because they just want them to think what they want.
Jocelyn Reyes
10/14/2012 03:18:40 pm
I agree with you, its better to take good important risks, than to wait for no one to take them

Danny acosta
10/14/2012 03:50:32 am
I don't think I will hide a book because it would be to risky and there are other ways to learn but than agian what they teach you is not that right because just playing sports and wathching tv you just wont learn like that but i still wont hide a book
Maddy Gelleri
10/14/2012 06:27:37 am
I agree with you because they don't learn anything in school, so how do they learn??

No I Wouldnt Take This Risk Of Hiding The Books Because I Wouldnt Want To Die. It Wouldnt Be Worth My Life It Would Be To Risky. Montag is very brave for doing This. Maybe His Wife Will Tell On Him And He'll Gwt Killed All Cuz Of Her Cuz She's Like Crazy.

I second that Montag is brave for doing that, I dont think I would steal the books either.
Maddy Gelleri
10/14/2012 06:24:25 am
I don't think I would steal a book because I wouldn't have the guts to risk my life. I like reading, but it's not something that I would die over. I feel like in this society it's easy to get with a book, so for those reasons I would not steal or hide any.
ms greene

I agree with yetzeby, we would like to only read books we're into or that are interesting.
Markus Rieks
10/14/2012 07:21:37 am
I honestly don't know. I would want to be tough and rebellious and hide books, but then again, if i was born in that generation would I really want to? If we look at our society, we are all sucked into our computers, IPhones, Xboxs, etc. so for the kids we aren't that far from that style of life. And is it worth risking my family, house, and life? But if i had the same mentality that I do now then, of coarse! I would take it upon myself to collect books. We all live on this world and it doesn't help if only a select few are educated and the rest are dumber than a rock. One of the only ways to improve as a whole is to make people smarter, the more minds the better. I would also start creating books and helping people who were willing to open there eyes and see the crumbling society. The only way i could decide is if I was then and there.
ms greene
10/14/2012 09:02:16 am
all good points, but are there other ways to perpetuate knowledge than just through books? Does all knowledge come from reading? Plus, you are right. We are a product of our societies and how can we say that we would have the ability to see beyond our culture.
Samantha Tong
10/14/2012 07:52:17 am
If I lived in this society, I would take the risk of having books. I would take the risk because if we didn't have books, ten we wouldn't be educated and I couldn't live without books. Also books can give you a better perspective of life and they give you a bigger imagination. When I read books, it makes me feel like I'm actually there and I can picture what the scenes are in my head. Books also improve your vocabulary and make you a smarter person. Reading books are also a fun thing to do if it is a really interesting book and you can't stop reading it because it has you glued to the pages.
Michelle Covarrubias
10/14/2012 04:15:27 pm
You are right books make us smarter because they give us info and if we don't get a word we can look it up in the dictionary which improves our vocabulary.
Samantha Tong
10/14/2012 08:08:32 am
If I lived in this society, I would take the risk of hiding books like Montag. I would take this risk because I love reading books. If we didn't have books, then our whole society would pretty much fall apart. Books are what make us smart, educated people. Also, books are very interesting. They give us a better vocabulary and a bigger imagination. If we didn't have books, people wouldn't know our country's history, laws, math, etc. Over the summer is when I read the most and have the most free time to read, so I would definately take the risk of hiding books.
Michelle Covarrubias
10/14/2012 02:46:13 pm
I agree with you because without books we wouldn't know about our country's history and the people of today put random things on the Internet that may not be true.
Kendall Liston
10/14/2012 01:46:54 pm
I probably would end up taking a book since I like to read. or I'd just move somewhere new where they speak english and allow you to read. it seems way easier then stealing a book and risk having my house be burnt down and going to jail. but if that wasn't an option, then yeah I'd steal a book. I'd steal it because I like to read and write. and if this society is supposed to make sure people are happy, shouldn't people be allowed to read if it makes them happy?
Jocelyn Reyes
10/14/2012 02:21:38 pm
If I lived in this society I would try to hide a book like Montag too because books are important in life. If the government wasn't letting us get a hold of books, I would be to curious to let it slip like the rest of the kids who are more focused on watching TV or playing games. Without books how would we be able to learn if all we're doing is playing games? Even though it could be dangerous task, I think it’s worth taking a risk once in a while. So therefore I would rather live an interesting and adventurous life then to live a boring life where all you do is the same old thing like everyone else.
Nancy Anaya
10/14/2012 02:26:02 pm

I would hide the books. I think it wouldn't be far if people told us that we cant or allowed to read. Books make you smart and let's your mind make movies in your head and I love that. I feel free when I read. If we couldn't read the world would probly be crazy and people make bad mistakes. If books were not allowed just think people wouldnt be smart. They would play games at school and not learn any think at all. If we weren't allowed to read then couldent read the rules or signs. 10/15/2012 12:58:35 pm
I totally agree with gabby. I think it would be really risky and dangerous to steal a book. But I think I would do it anyways, I would rather take a little risk and know more knowledge and more important information by reading books. I would have more knowledge than everyone else, because everyone else would just be playing games and watching tv in school. And I guess that would get kinda boring.
Cristan Ruberto
10/15/2012 10:27:06 am
I think that I would hide books, like Montag, because books are important. They give you the knowledge, and understanding on how the world really is. I know that it is a big risk; and choosing between your house, and a few pages of paper seems odd, but I would do it. I would like to learn, about people's past lives and not just participate in sports, like in this society. Books are an amazing way to learn, and go into a whole new world, and I wouldn't want to miss out on that.
Ariana
10/15/2012 12:36:17 pm
I would take the risk of hiding books, because without them I would have no knowledge. Without them we wouldn't be able to learn or know about anything. We would only be focused on television, phones, iPods, and other electronics. For example if we did have books our vocabulary skills would expand and we would be capable of learning new things for a better society.
Daniella Cerruti
10/15/2012 02:16:13 pm
If I lived in that society, I would take a book and hide it. Depending on what type of person you are or if you liked to read the answer would be different. I think reading is very important and teaches you life lessons, and builds up your vocabulary but then again you are taking a risk of stealing something which is not a good habit. If people did not read in life they would not be educated and there for would not get jobs, have a family and so on. Reading is a great thing for fun and for the brain! I say take the books

If I were in that society in Montags position, i would not hide th books and hope to get away with it because in that society, they seem like they have the technology to find books instead of using humans to turn in an alarm to the firemen. i would also not try to hide because they would have thrown me into prison or probably executed.
